Sensorial Diversity

The Sensory Processing Framework outlines four distinct sensory processing profiles, categorizing individuals based on their responses to sensory stimuli, which sheds light on diverse behavioral patterns:

  1. Children with a low registration profile may not readily notice stimuli that others perceive. They may appear unresponsive to their surroundings because they require a higher quantity and intensity of stimuli to process sensory information. For them, vivid colors, distinct textures, and heightened sounds could be beneficial.
  2. The sensory seeker is active and needs to be constantly engaged. They may require an upbeat melody to encourage humming and loud vocalizations to reach their high threshold for auditory stimulation. Simultaneously, they play with all the pieces to satisfy their needs for visual and tactile stimuli.
  3. Children experiencing sensory sensibility may feel overwhelmed and distressed due to their heightened sensitivity to stimuli. In such situations, the presence of gentle textures and soothing colors can offer a sense of calm without exceeding their low threshold for tactile perception.
  4. The child with a sensory avoider tendency is often resistant to change, finding comfort in a strict and predictable routine. A gentle, repetitive melody typically enhances their play experience. They may lean towards tranquility and take pleasure in spending extended periods playing alone.

Recognizing these profiles is crucial during children's playtime, as tailoring environments and activities to their unique sensory needs ensures a more inclusive and enriching play experience, fostering their overall development and well-being.
